印度佛教傳入中國後，法義與戒律之精神皆悉不變，但為了適應中國文化的特色，而逐漸發展成中國特色的佛教，屬性上傾向於成佛之道的大乘佛法，與南傳佛教屬性上傾向於小乘佛法大異其趣，後人稱為漢傳佛教。
