「老房子不要一直拆，才能保有特色。」木工師傅余曉明完成台中多棟老屋改造，讓老屋新生，他的原則是：老東西能用則用，管線非換不可。

余曉明正裝修一棟百年木造平房，改為咖啡廳。木屋是竹編夾泥牆配木頭結構，但屋頂梁柱遭蟲蝕，屋瓦破損，加上曾租給寺廟，內牆被燻得黑漆漆。

「有缺角的，就找碎瓦慢慢拼。」余曉明抽換梁柱結構，把摔破的瓦片用碎片修補，拼了十多片屋瓦，再放回屋頂，最後一片不缺；燻黑的牆面用清水洗乾淨，維持歲月的痕跡，「說它自己的故事。」

余曉明說，老房子不要隨便拆，才能保有特色；只要屋頂保有三分之一以上，結構就沒問題。不過，電線、水管應更換，早期家電用品少，電線較細，現在用電量大增，電線換新以免走火；浴廁、水管重新設計，就會變得很舒適。
