每年的5月18日為「國際博物館日」，台北市文化局今年串連73家公、民營博物館，舉辦「2013台北市國際博物館日」活動，各館紛紛推出「延長開館時間」、「免費入場」、藝文展演或其他優惠措施，邀民眾趁著周休假日走進博物館，感受五花八門的知性與感性饗宴。

「國際博物館日」是由國際博物館協會(ICOM)於1977年創設，訂於每年5月18日舉行，活動主題年年不同，今年設定為「博物館（記憶＋創意）＝社會變革」。

參與「2013台北市國際博物館日」串連的73個館所，5月18日當天免收門票的有14館，5月19日免票則有12館，如草山行館、台北市立美術館、台北當代藝術館、台北偶戲館、台北二二八紀念館、國立歷史博物館、台灣科學教育館、林柳新紀念偶戲博物館、芝山文化生態園區、郵政博物館、蘇荷兒童美術館、台北城市科技大學機器人博物館等，均為兩天都免門票。其餘許多館所票價、餐飲或消費也都提供優惠。

包括台北故事館、北投文物館、北美館、樹火紀念紙博物館等在內的12個館所，5月18或19日也將延長開放時間（晚間7點至10點不等）。此外，5月18日當天，北投溫泉博物館準備1,500份軟性紀念磁鐵，贈送參訪民眾（每人一份、送完為止）；台北探索館也將贈送10週年L型夾，齊東街日式宿舍「台北琴道館」則致贈古琴書籤。
